90s Video Games, Episode 131

King’s Field was one of first games for the Playstation 1, and was released only in Japan. Not to be confused with King’s Field 2, which was also released as King’s Field for the western audiences. While it was not localized into English, a fan has written a full English translation patch.

The player takes the role of Jean Alfred Forrester, who is searching for his missing father. The main aspects of gameplay consist of first-person battles, puzzle solving, and exploration.

The game takes place in the Medieval land of Verdite, which was once terrorised by evil powers.

For today’s standards, this game may look a bit slow and sluggish, however. Back in a day it was the shit! Even though, I was only able to play it in japanese, and didn’t understand any of the story. Please don’t compare it with Doom or Hexen series. It was the first hint what was going to happen in gaming, with many 3D adventure and RPG games released on following years for the PS 1.

Enjoy the first 25 minutes of the game.
