Video Games of 1993 were revolutionary in many ways. First of all, infamous Doom was released and it set standard for all first person 3D shooters to come. Racing got 3D on the Arcades (Ridge Racer) as well on the home consoles (Crash ‘n Burn on 3DO console). Also, the first 3D fighting game called Virtua Fighter was born.

Back in 1993, arcades were still a pretty big deal, Jurassic Park confirmed that dinosaurs were real, and some of the most memorable franchises in video gaming were born. Console makers were racing to try and bring the arcade experience home with machines like the 3DO, the Atari Jaguar, and the Amiga CD32, but in the end, it was the experiences that mattered most.

We all know Doom, so let’s leave it aside. What else came out in 1993?

One of the most memorable video games of the year is NBA JAM. It became a cult classic. At one point, it was the highest-earning arcade game of all time.

Mortal Kombat franchise reached to the new heights with Mortal Kombat II. It’s notable for improving the gameplay and introducing more varied finishing moves (including several Fatalities per character and new finishers, such as Babality and Friendship) and several iconic characters, such as Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Noob Saibot, and the series’ recurring villain, Shao Kahn.

Hardware of 1993

Sega releases the Model 2, an arcade system board that introduces 3D texture filtering. It becomes their most popular arcade system board. Fujitsu releases the FM Towns Marty in Japan, as the first 32-bit home console, starting the fifth console generation. Panasonic, GoldStar and Sanyo release the first versions of the 3DO 32-bit console Atari Corporation releases the Jaguar home console, calling it the first 64-bit video game system. Commodore Business Machines releases the Amiga CD32 multimedia home console.
